Legislative Alert! – SB 798

Yesterday, the Assembly Public Safety Committee, of which I am a member, heard arguments in support of and against SB 798  (De León) which would classify all BB gun and airsoft devices as imitation firearms, thereby subjecting them to new rules and specifications (i.e. color, packaging, etc).

After hearing a great deal of testimony on this controversial bill, I am pleased to inform you that SB 798 failed to pass. The committee voted to oppose this legislation with a vote of 2:5. Please be assured that I not only strongly opposed this legislation, but I spoke out against in during committee discussion.

This bill is unnecessary and excessive. In fact, coloring BB guns and Airsoft products in bright colors will do little except give parents and children the impression that these devices are toys. This creates confusion and hides the fact that they can cause serious or fatal injury if misused or improperly handled.

We need to focus our efforts on strengthening the economy and creating jobs, not creating new hardships and restrictions for retailers, business owners, and responsible gun owners.

I am glad that my colleagues agreed with me on this issue and I thank you for your continued action and support. It is because of your involvement that we were able to kill this unreasonable legislation.

It is an honor to serve you and the State of California.

Sincerely,

Assemblyman Curt Hagman

District 60

It was a great victory for the airsoft community but the fight is not over Deleon has the chance to have his voice heard again. We need to stand fast and stick together, we need to show that this sport is safe and we need to be safe. I posted a video on the second it passed. Please view rate and comment.

PRESS RELEASE

Legislation to Protect Police and the Public from the Dangers of Fake Firearms

Passes out of Senate Public Safety Committee

(Sacramento, CA) – At the request of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Chief Charlie Beck after the December 2010 shooting of a 13-year-old boy by a LAPD officer, Senator Kevin de León introduced a bill to protect police and the public from the dangers of fake firearms. Senate Bill 798 passed out of the Senate Public Safety Committee today, Tuesday, April 26, 2011 after police officers presented a 9mm Beretta and a copycat BB gun, showing how easy it is to mistake a fake firearm for the real thing.

Senate Bill 798

Senate Bill 798

(Can you tell which one’s the real gun? Answer below)

“SB 798 will help keep our communities safe,” said Senator Kevin de León. “Today’s vote brought us one step closer to preventing tragic accidents, especially the shooting of minors and young adults, by law enforcement officers.

Testifying in support of the bill were Alejandro Esparza, representing Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; LAPD Deputy Chief and Chief of Detectives, David Doan; and Richard Tompkins, LAPD Detective and Firearms Expert and Sergeant William Moulder from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The bill is also supported by Women Against Gun Violence.

SB 798 addresses this public safety problem by requiring BB guns to be brightly colored, adhering to the same laws and regulations set forth for imitation firearms.

SB 798 next moves to the Senate Floor for consideration early next month.

(Caption Answer: The upper gun with the gold seal is a 9mm Beretta and the lower gun is a copycat BB gun.)

Lipo Battery

Posted: January 19, 2011 in Shopping

Today I have been shopping for lipo batteries and something that I discovered today was internal resistance. I have purchased some low budget batteries and some high rated batteries IE RA TECH. So I came across Blue Lipo and it was only by chance I was on a budget and I wanted to have a Lipo. I did not want to spend money on a lipo battery that cost over 80 – 100 dollars. I decided shop for batteries at hobby shops not over priced Airsoft stores. I told my self there has to be some good price’s and knowledge since hobby stores have been in the battery game much longer than airsofters have. I discovered several stores that carry blue Lipo, tenrgy, sky, gens ace, and other generics. I have come to conclusion that many batteries are made with the same intention give you the best power for the buck. I found that the only way to truly rate how a battery performs is by looking for batteries with low internal resistance. How often do we really look at this? Well no one told us, right? I have discovered that most of the problems related to the airsoft gun problems IE stripped gears, stripped pistons, and pinion gears, come from Lipo batteries. Is it really the bad gear sets and pistons or inconsistent batteries? We spend tons of money on our AEG’s because we want to have the best internals? Why because we want high fps, high rof or low but I have found that most batteries are never checked. We just go into a Airsoft store like evike get our AEG and batteries and then we are on our way. We then go to TAC City and show off to our friends and then discover that our piston stripped. We always say “get a better piston”, “are your gears shimmed”, “your gun is not lipo ready”, etc….. We need to look at batteries internal resistance before you buy. The bottom line is always check. If you have a two cell battery or three cell battery, all cells should be somewhere in the 4’s when you check. How do you check you ask? You can ask the retailer your buying from to check with a charger before you leave. If they have good chargers then they should be able to check to see what the internal resistance is. If they can not show you then maybe you should think twice before buying a battery from an Airsoft retailer.

VFC M4 Stock replacement

So yesterday I was able to remove the end cap of the VFC M4 pistol that I purchased from Evike. I had a cqb stock that I got from ebairsoft for 12.00 with shipping. I had to cut the screw down so that it would fit on the back of the stock. I then placed it on the back of the baby M4 and this is what it looks like.  I will be adding a front RIS, I decided to go with the Diablo rail system since it comes with an inner barrel. I was going to go with a Daniel Defense but it did not come with an outer barrel. I was not going to spend another 30 dollars on an outer barrel. Wish me luck!!! I will finish with the internals  once the externals are complete.

Airsoft VFC

Once I am done I will be adding a Mosfet with Active Breaking. This should be fun as I should be done with this project in about three weeks from day.

This is the final project, I am officially finished with my VFC M4 Baby convert. I have to say it was fun and I had little to no problems with VFC. I have to say aside from the piston VFC makes excellent products. The Craftsmanship is above all! I had several G&P guns and VFC still takes this one. VFC gearbox’s are excellent and with little to effort I was able to get a high fps and high rate of fire. I also made my gun look nice take a look at the video and I hope you enjoy.

Airsofts

M4 pistol

So I decided to purchase a VFC baby M4 pistol because of the external and internal upgrade potential.

External – The VFC looks great from many reviews that I have read. The attention to detail is what catches my eye

Internals – according to many reviews on youtube I have found that many airsofters agree that the internals are great. slim gearbox reinforced, 8mm bushings that is flush with the inside of the gearbox, piston that looks very similar to the azmiuth piston (airsoft-gi would like to claim this piston as there own), shots 330 – 360 fps, the only parts I will be buying for this gun is a front ris setup. I’m going to go with Daniel Defense 7 inch since my noveske will sit flush inside… This is just my style : ). I will be running a 11.1v 20c 1800mah lipo. I decided to go with Blue lipo from Blue Lipo Battery its only going to cost me 10 -11 dollars. The great thing about this battery aside from the price, the internal resistance of the lipo battery is very low. This means that you get a 25c rated battery you reall get a 25c rated battery. Most batteries claim to have the correct C rating but actually run lower. Make sure you get your deans connectors and a cheap soldering iron from Radio shack. Once I am done I am going to add my butt stock that I got from ebairsoft for 10 dollars this is the same G and P quality rubberized material cqb model with rear door. The G and P model is nice but you have to remove the stock to change the battery and this can be a chore. I should have something that looks like this….

M4 CQB

M4 CQB

5 qualities when looking for Airsofts M4 CQB look

1. Airsofts Pistol M4 – When shopping for a high speed gun I always look for airsofts pistol brand (M4 Pistol). The reason I look for pistol M4’s is because of the cost, short barrel and ability to upgrade.

2 Airsofts Branding – The Brands we tend to look for rang from airsofts brand of ICS, VFC, and KWA.

  • KWA M4 CQB- The CQB Airsofts Model is fine but can be hard to deal with when it comes to changing externals. The internals are great, gearbox great but KWA’s two peace airsofts hop up could use some work. Keep in mind we are looking for something cheap and at 275.00 this is not cheap.
  • ICS M4 Pistol- This is fun gun to have when airsofts come to mind. The ICS has a strong gear set, poor brass bushings but can be replaced, plastic hop-up only works with ICS, good high speed motor, with a little love and care and little to no money I was able to achieve 30 + ROF with  11.1 lipo and good durability. Cost 185.00 Great buy
  • VFC Baby Pistol – This is excellent externally and internally with no complaints. It seems lately that many manufactures have been jumping on the VFC bandwagon when it comes to the internals. VFC has 8 mm bushings flushed not  8 mm bears : ( .  Don’t worry about this being bushings because they are flush with the gearbox and this allows for smooth rotation when the gears are spinning. Excellent piston almost like the Azmuith piston but in a clear color. Performance is like KWA and ICS. Cost 275.00 Great buy but not excellent because of the cost factor.

3. Airsofts – Upgrade-ability – When shopping for an airsoft gun I always look at upgrade-ability. I want to get a gun that will allow me to make many changes with the gear set, motor, inner barrel , hop-up, and piston. Some guns for instance ICS you stuck with using only ICS parts and this can be a head soar but with modifying parts of the piston and sector gear you can have a high speed setup. When shopping for an ICS make sure you know what you are looking for and what game plan you are looking for. High speed, High FPS, or both. When we airsofts make sure you know what you are going to for.

4. Airsofts Cost – The cost of an airsoft gun can be confusing and frustrating keep in mind when looking for an airsoft gun you want quality, price, and upgrade potential.  The externals can wait and over time you will have what you want.

This is my view on the top 4 attributes to look for in a CQB airsoft gun. If you comments or Ideas please post.
